Gareth Davies MP visited the home of the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet, His Majesty’s Naval Base Clyde, near Glasgow.
Gareth had the privilege to meet the submariners who crew and operate the Royal Navy’s hunter-killer submarines, the Trafalgar and new Astute-class, and Vanguard-class submarines which carry our nuclear deterrent.
Overall, Britain’s nuclear submarine fleet delivers a truly global presence and enormous capability - protecting the UK’s interests overseas.
Since April 1969, at any given moment, at least one Royal Navy submarine has been deployed carrying ballistic missiles to maintain our continuous-at-sea nuclear deterrent. Work is currently underway to extend the UK’s nuclear deterrent beyond the early 2030s, with the planned introduction of four Dreadnought Class ballistic missile submarines to replace the current four Vanguard submarines - securing thousands of highly skilled engineering jobs in the UK.
Gareth remains committed to the longstanding UK Government position on Britain maintaining a vital nuclear weapon capability in an ever-volatile geopolitical environment.
