Following calls and meetings throughout today, Gareth Davies MP has provided the following update:
"Following the recent very heavy rain in our area we continue to see significant localised flooding and I continue to be in regular contact with the relevant agencies and organisations at the forefront of the response. Here is a quick update on some of my engagement so far today for your information:
1. Environment Agency
This afternoon I had a call with Peter Reilly, Area Duty Manager at the Environment Agency to get an update on the EA’s response to the flooding in our area and their ongoing assessment of the flooding risks. As I would expect, several EA teams are out across communities and I am informed that the worst impacted villages are thankfully seeing receding water levels, but clearly this has been and continues to be, an incredibly distressing time for those who’s homes are flooded.
The EA expect a period of dry weather in coming days which will obviously help but they continue to remain alert to changes and I have asked to continue to be kept regularly updated.
2. Government Floods Minister (DEFRA)
I have alerted the Minister to the flooding in our constituency by phone this morning and outlined the villages that have faced the worst conditions. I will continue to engage with him, especially as the Government have today announced funding to support businesses, houses and farmers suffering. Both he and the DEFRA Secretary of State visited northern Lincolnshire and Newark this afternoon and have taken a very proactive approach to engaging with MPs impacted by the floods.
3. Anglian Water
I made urgent contact with Anglian Water who I understand are working hard to keep our sewer network flowing as well as possible. Significant flooding has meant that the sewer system, although in practical working-order, has been an issue in some areas such as in Greatford.
I have been advised that their local pumping station has also been affected by flooding. Pumps have now restarted, but I understand that it may take some time for the sewer network to recover. I will continue to follow developments on this closely and speak with them when necessary.
4. Community efforts have been amazing
I want to thank again local parish councils, local authorities and community groups in-and-around affected villages for their fantastic efforts and real community spirit in assisting residents to access toilet and other basic facilities.
I will continue to keep constituents updated with any relevant information as and when I receive it."
