Gareth Davies MP has supported the balanced approach to reaching Net Zero set out by the Prime Minister this week.
In recent decades, the UK has reduced its emissions faster than any other G7 economy and continually over-delivered on its carbon commitments - now making up less than 1% of all global emissions.
This approach from the Prime Minister means that people will still be able to buy petrol and diesel cars and vans until 2035 and won’t have to switch to heat pumps unless they’re replacing their existing boiler anyway, and only after 2035. Where this is most impractical, homes will be exempt from making a switch at all.
Meanwhile, the Government is redoubling efforts to make environmentally friendly options more affordable and practical. As part of this, there will now be a 50% increase in grants to upgrade boilers and urgent work is ongoing to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Gareth said:
“From the meetings I’ve had and correspondence I’ve received from constituents, it’s clear that an approach which involves pricing people out of a car to get to work, or a boiler to heat their home, cannot be right or best – especially not for rural areas like ours.
So I fully support the Prime Minister’s announcement yesterday of a different approach to politics, which prioritises getting the balance right, and setting the right trajectory, over quick headlines and warm words from activists.
Ultimately, it is our responsibility as politicians to give it our all to make net zero work for people, rather than requiring people to give their all to make net zero work for politicians.”
