I warmly congratulate Liz Truss on her election as the new Leader of the Conservative Party and our next Prime Minister. It has been a hard-fought campaign, which has showcased the broad array of talent we have in our party. While I was proud to support my friend Rishi Sunak, who worked tirelessly after launching his campaign in Grantham in July, our new Prime Minister will have my full support as she leads the nation forward.
We face significant and pressing challenges, with high inflation at home and around the world, driven by the spiking global cost of energy which has been triggered by the international threat of Russian aggression. As Foreign Secretary, Liz has been at the forefront of the efforts of the United Kingdom and our allies to support the Ukrainians and confront Putin’s territorial ambitions. Throughout her campaign, Liz has been clear in her intentions to help households with the cost of living with financial support and by growing our economy – increasing wealth and opportunity for us all – as well as to safeguard the funding of our fantastic public services.
I look forward to working with our new Prime Minister to ensure that Her Majesty’s Government continues to deliver for the people of Grantham and Stamford and right across the country.
